Hi chaps, was just wondering what MPG other people got out of their coupes? (2 ltr ones)
Mines managing about 20mpg which is proving to be rather expensive, especially with the price for premium fuel. Just thought I'd better check if it's right. I do a mix of town driving then on duel carriageways. Cheers, Dave. |

i also have a 1994 cc GT5E,i usually get around 27mpg, on mainly town driving,
(98,000 covered on the car), i use shell v power, which i think i get more mpg out of & makes the car run better but obviously costs more. ps.: was a GT5SE the one with extra equipment ![]() cheers |

I think (IMHO) the JS 5 pot 1994cc engine was one of the best 5 pots ever made, a beautifully balanced engine. It'd have been absolutely sublime with forced induction.
It was also one of the most economic 5 pots, and 20mpg is just wrong, sorry. It should be well up into the late 20's early 30's in normal driving and mid 30's on a run. Have a look at all those vacuum pipes that scamper across the head and if you can, get an air line onto them and blow the crud out of them. That'd help, as would giving the injectors a good blast through and fit new injector seals (only a couple of pounds). It's probably (hopefully) something as simple as that.

I don' t know the exact differences in the European 2 litre injected 5 pot and the American version. I believe that yours runs a slightly hotter cam and higher compression. That being said, my US model CGT gets an average of 24-25 miles per gallon overall. The one time I truly checked the MPG on a long highway run, she got 30. My understanding is that our emission standards at the time were a little harsher, and our cars had to strike a different balance between fuel economy and emissions.
Truth is, your cars seem to run better, pull harder, and maybe even sound better. Bottom line I never get as low as 20, even all around town driving. Sounds like she needs a going through.

I'll have a go at the vacuum hoses this week.
It seems to be one thing after another right now. I replaced the fuel pump and filter last week as the old one was making a loud buzzing sound, Also replaced some of the fuel return line as it was corroded. but I also think the fuel pump relay is on its way out as the pump (even though it's been replaced) still only intermittently primes, and its struggling to start when it's cold. Is there anything else I should check? I only use the Shell V power fuel. I pulled the air filter earlier and that looks pretty recent. Car does smell a bit fumey sometimes though. |

...The imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, and the US (Queen Anne) gallon is 3.7853 litres; therefore 1 imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallons... So you would expect to get lower mp(US)g. Apply conversion and you are getting about 28mpg in Imperial gallons. In UK I get 27-28mpg locally and low 30s on a run. (2226 KV CQ) |

Is this really true? 1 UK gal. = 1.2 US gal. I honestly had no idea, there were multiple standards for the gallon. I had wondered for a long time how some of your Audi's got such phenomenal MPG. I still the hotter cam/higher comp. holds true as well. Now going to go outside and look at the maximum capacity of my gas tank and do some algebra........

Interesting....
![]() My US spec booklet for my '83 injected CGT has a fuel capacity of 15.9 gallons or 60 liters. 100 hp at 5100 rpm, and 8.2 to 1 compression My Euro Spec booklet for the same car specifies 15 gallons or 68 liters. 130 bhp at 5900 rpm, 9.3 to 1 compression Given that, my car's fuel economy by UK standards would run between 30-36 mpg I always knew there was a discrepency but not so glaring. ![]()
