In what way has it given up?
Is it a case of lots of problems culminating in failure?

drop a 1.6 diesel in!! trust me if its your daily the fuel money you'll save will in turn pay for the engine swap! i get 65mpg easy out of by b2 80 diesel. you'll find 1 in a b3 passat 1.6td, or a straight 1.6diesel mk1 golf caddy etc

1.8 is the same block, might have problems with the fuel tank and lines if fitting a diesel
