Good engine from what I know, was fitted to the Golf 4 and Bora as a transverse unit but was it fitted to the Passat longways ? I don't know without checking

Technically, it's not a true V but a VR, a "V in a Row". Don't know about longitudinal or transverse mounting but it was fitted to the Golf Mk4, Bora, Passat (B5), new Beetle and Seat Toledo Mk2.

Just a VR6 minus 1 pot
They do sound horny with a halfway decent exhaust... Have thought about doing a transplant into the CGT at some point

The VR5 engine was pretty good. It was made in 10 and 20v guises, outputting 150 and 170bhp respectively.

Very free revving with a nice noise. Slightly low on torque low down but in a light car (the Mk4 Golf was NOT light!!) it would make a great exchange.
Go for a late 20v unit though as these have variable cam timing and lots more punch than the older 10v.

Saying that, the 2.8/2.9 VR6 enigne is only marginally bigger physically and would I'm sure fit.
The 2.8 12v and 2.9 12v were good and torquey but the later 24v 2.8 with 204bhp was the one to have. Very smooth delivery and with a map my Mrs' revs to over 7400rpm!

Both the 5 and 6 pots have LOADS of tuning bits available, including fairly cheap bolt-on supercharger kits!

I often follow one back from work (Golf VR5) has a Millteck exhaust and sounds great but was still able to keep with it in my old Passat TDi which probably upset him as he slowed down to let me past and then saw the TDi badge (all silver to fool people)
Looking at the figures it probably performed in a similar way to the 7A 20V 5 cylinder, another great engine once poor injectors thrown out..

I can vouch for the six potter! Howls like a Ferrari Dino / Stratos on full foot treatment. Just need a nice non - resonated Milltek now.
