When you,re checking your valve clearance, make sure you warm up your head.(Wear a hat.)
My Bentley manual, says"coolant temp 35c(95f)moderately warm.

To be honest the difference in temp you are talking about would make a miniscule difference to the gap and better to work on a cold engine unless you're doing it outside when its -10 in which case the warm engine would be appreciated

Shims only need replacing when the camshaft and followers wear. With hydraulic followers they do the job of adjusting for this wear automatically as they operate on oil pressure so as bits wear they just allow a bit more oil in and so decrease the clearance to suit. With a shimmed engine the follwers are always a fixed size, unless they wear in which case the gap increases, couple this with a bit of cam wear and you have your rattel.
You measure the existing gaps, remove the shims to see whats in there now, take the correct figure from the shim size you have in your hand and then get new shims that take account of the difference.

Only trouble is you really struggle getting bloody shims now!
