Audi 90 b2 starting issue

Hi ,
the car in question is a b2 90 2.0, the problem was that it always started 3rd turn of the key but it did start, this went on for a couple of months. Then the fuel pump gave up the ghost, so had it replaced. Back to starting 3rd turn, however now the car only starts sometimes. On the odd occasion it will fire up and run fine, other times the engine will crank but it will not start. I`ve had the fuel ump relay checked at work and apparently it is fine. Anyone have any ideas please?
