Default Fuel pump doesn't come on - coupe GT5e

Hi have a weird problem with my audi coupe gt5e - '84

Went to start it saturday, pump didn't make the usual prime noise tried to start it to no avail, check spark, timing etc then checked for fuel, no fuel coming through

Went to gsf got a new pump for £30 stuck that on, tried again pump primed and car started to run then cut out after about 30 seconds, tried again - nothing

Fuel pump won't prime, I've checked all the fuses and cleaned all the contacts on everything I could find.

Wired in a 12v feed to the pump to check it wasn't faulty works fine.

What's stopping it priming? I don't really want to have it running from a permanent 12v feed with a switch.

Haynes manual doesn't have a wiring loom diagram and I can't find a relay that says it runs the fuel pump.

Ideas I'm stuck getting the bus to work till i can resolve this

Number 6 is 171919091a and comes up under searches as...

171919091A control unit for shift and consumption indicator relay location: / 3

Does it also do the fuel pump? If so I'm funked as GSF/Audi/VW/Unipart/Ebay can't match it :|

Yes, the fuel pump relay sounds like the culprit. It happened to a CQ i used to own. An auto electrician rebuilt the relay for not much money which cured the problem. The relay does burn out, but it can be hastened by a failing pump drawing too much current which overloads the relay so the pump replacement was probably a good idea. Also, change the fuel filter, an often neglected maintenance area in these cars. A knackered or blocked fuel filter can make the pump fail more quickly.
