thanks Ben , agree they are great value but am going for the old classic ( Craig favourites ) wagon wheels. Already purchased from Shaun5 . Appreciate the tip off though.

Frank,

Very nice cabby sir!!

Ok firstly you car was fitted with an airbag as standard as it's the later facelift model (pre final edition).

Might be an idea to change the other sensor behind the passenger side head as they are cheap and do send a signal to the temp guage, as well as the MFTS one that you just changed behind the drivers side head. How is you fuel guage is it working correctly? Seeing as the wiring to the horn/airbag has been butchered is it possible the wiring behind the clocks has been damaged as well? Do you have one or two fans for cooling the radiator, there are staged and I think one kicks it at around 98c and the other comes in at around 110c, if it's one fan it has dual speeds and kicks to the higher speed at around 105c. Fans shouldn't really come on until you are sat in traffic or idling for a long time though. Might be an idea to change the fan switch on the rad as well, again cheap to buy.

Wheels all your choice, 15's or 16's give the nicest ride, I prefer the 17 inch boleros but they tramline like hell.

Andy

Hi Andy, many thanks for the helpful comments above.

With what has already been suggested and with your comments too, I'm happy to report that I've found the culprit but it has thrown up another question.

With the last wreck of the road that I bought ( the red Audi 80 Avant TDI auto ) came a box of spare bits, wing mirrors , switches and also a spare instrument binnacle. So before lunch I whisked out the instrument binnacle from the Cabrio and having checked that most bits looked the same , plugged the new binnacle into place and here's the result.

Only problem is that this "set" indicates 130,000 miles as opposed to the cars original which shows 113,000. Another issue is that the tacho is reading too high. Probably because this is for a 4 cylinder car and the Cabrio is a V6 I'm guessing.

Any ideas? As I don't know where in the binnacle the original problem lies, I'm a bit wary about dismantling the units and swapping stuff over as I might end up worse off with two fooked binnacles knowing my electronic skills !!

Answers on a post card please or here if you prefer.

Only one fan on this car so propose a road trip in a minute to test out the car with the new temp gauge in place and see if the fan does get around to firing up.

Thanks for your input and help. See you in Looe sometime perhaps? Hope so.

Frank.

p.s. Airbag bulb coming out in just a minute.....

The temp guage should be held in by two nuts, loosen then tighten them up again as they are the electrical connections.

Lovely colour Frank ( had a kingfisher A3 T Sport late '99- 2002)
Electrical gremlins are the pits as I found out earlier this year..... slowly and methodically is the answer and a voltmeter is helpful- or even a bulb with a probe.
Don't dislike the wheels but 10 spokes will look better.
