The alternator on my v8 died very slowly, a few years back. It started off with just a lower output, noticeable only if you have a gauge and are aware of what it is normally reading, eventually fluctuating sufficient to bring the charging light on very faintly, and intermittently. I managed to nurse it quite a long way by reducing loads. Rather like your symptoms.
