Fault code reader?

I'm thinking of buying a fault code reader,my son's Polo has a problem that I need to sort,we have 3 VAG cars,a Peugeot,and an MG in the household,I know nothing about them, would I be better getting reader that will do all makes or just VAG? Also the one's I've looked at on line quote 2 systems OBD11 and EOBD what are the systems.Thanks Andy
