On the news this morning I heard the government is considering introducing checks on motorists' health every ten years.

They will be looking at eyesight, reaction times, general health etc. and we will expect to pay £80 for the privilege.

I'm all for ensuring drivers are not a danger to others, but it's bound to cost at least twice as much as they expect!

Another layer of bureaucracy we will have to deal with!

In theory these ideas all sound very clever, but in practice they are only as reliable as the people operating them. Just how many hoops will you have to jump through to sort out any mistakes? I suppose the next thing will be mandatory re-taking of our driving tests every few years!

this f...king goverment thinking of another waty to screw the motorist over again why not sort out the motorist who use phone while driving or the idiot asshole who smash up people cars and the law and this goverment do f..k all to them but pay for them to go on communtity hoilday to do f..k all but punishment for there crime is a laugh and joke let hope including footballer who get away with everything because of power and money behind them , really get the true treatment thay desire , i feel sorry for the victim

I'm afraid to say I'd welcome medical tests for drivers AND regular re testing of driving ability to be honest.
There are an aweful lot of drivers on the road who really are in no fit state to be behind the wheel (my parents are a prime example, as is the old man I saw doing 45mph on the M6 on Christmas morning)
The other thing to consider is that driving conditions have changed massively over the last 30 years and there needs to be some way to bring older drivers up to date and to teach people how to drive on our very crowded roads, the huge amount of accidents that closed motorways over the christmas period is a good example..

My old man drives around like its 1976, he's just bought a new A6 V6FSI Sportline that is way way way too fast for him, I'm scared to be a passenger..
BTW I'm no youngster myself, but doing a few AAM driving assesments a few years ago really opened my eyes...

Unfortunately a lot of the bad practises on the road. I believe, is down to the lack of police. How often do you see a patrol car on the road? Speed cameras are ok at slowing people down, but as long as you drive through the cameras at the correct speed you don't get caught. More police on the road would be a deterent to those who son't bother with licences, insurance, tax or MOT's. The figure is quite frightening. About a million or so. I'm not saying this would cure bad driving, but if a copper sees someone driving erratically they can at least pull them over and take the neccessary action. Well that's my two penneth.

I hear what you say Addicted, but you are referring mainly to our senior drivers. Introducing an age beyond which everyone relinquishes their licence could solve this.

I know from experience that the scale of these schemes are so vast that they cannot deal with the individual, who in turn can easily fall foul of its bureaucracy. Conversely, that same system usually begins to fail to identify what it is supposed to due to sheer weight of numbers, not to mention the effect of meeting government targets.

Anyway, I'm going to start another thread now as I've got something else to harp on about.
