Wonder how valid this info is but had same problem develop on a journey in my (dare I say it) PROTON.

An earth wire connection had corroded, 30 second fix by my mechanic.

Had to keep the revs up and brake with my right foot on journey home.

Does it try to idle with the revs rising and falling but stalls, or does it just die coming off the throttle?

Dies when u come of throttle and was taking around 5 seconds or so to start.

(Was writing this earlier when the battery died.)

Is idle entirely controlled via ecu/valve? If so, my guess, and it is just a guess, is the idle control. Signal to, connection, or valve itself.
A bad closed throttle switch on one of mine results in similar behaviour to older cars with blocked idle screw. Revs stabilise slowly, dies approaching junctions.
Presumably, so long as your foot is on the throttle, it stays running.
What about when you start it? Does it try to start? Die straight away?

Before you mess up your ISV with the so called "cleaning", check all intake elements. No idle and hard start more sounds like small air leak.

It's booked it to a Audi specialist Wednesday going to start with a smoke test for air leaks. Thanks guys for the input.
