I don't remember the B2 80 Sport having gas struts?! Did they? I had two of them plus two B2 80 quattro's and I don't remember them having them. Did they not have the big spring thing that the C3 100/200 saloon had? I do however remember being hit on the head a lot!

No gas struts on the 80 Sport I have and there are no struts on the rear donor end of an Audi 80 CL. There are some sort of metal rods that criss cross the area under the rear parcel shelf and they must be the springs that you are referring to. Definitely no gas struts though.....

Actually Frank is right, the more I think about it there were definitely no gas struts on the facelift B2 80's. Was this a mod carried out after too many bangs on the previous owners head? I did this with my 200, I based it on the set up in the V8, the springs had gone soft and the slightest incline or breeze would drop the boot lid firmly on my head! The B3 had gas struts didn't they, they could have come from a newer model.

Here is a picture ( albeit of a very dirty Audi 80 boot area and rear parcel shelf area) showing the tensioned grey metal rods used to power the boot open and allow it to be closed under spring tension.

I'll try and put the picture up again, just for interest but maybe its too boring and has been binned by the bosses?

According to VagCat/ETKA, there is a strut listed.

811827552A. Option?

Although, knowing how Audi's attention to detail goes wrt their drawings, that may be the tailgate strut.
T'internet gives a length of 305mm, rod stroke (oo er) of 110mm, or there a outs.
