When i bought the type 44 the exhaust was a scafolding pole welded on to a back box, since then i have had a custom stainless steel exhaust made for it, the manifold is a dialynx one and the exhuast is a straight through system.
Could this be strangling the power for the engine? the car does hold back sometimes and i was wondering if its the exhaust thats at fault. Dont want to go and get another exhaust made for it unless i really have to as the one thats on it sounds good ![]() Was just a random thought that it might not be doing the engine any favours ![]() |

I would have thought that a straight through would improve the gas flow and make the engine breathe a bit better?
When did you last change your air filter?

I'm with quattrokid - surely if you've got custom exhaust pipework & manifold + a straight thru silencer, you've got about as much exhaust breathing as the engine can handle unless you go up to a larger bore system ? i.e. on the list of your engine's limitations, the exhaust system should now be last on the list, not first. Unless there's summat else bothering you about it, that I'm missing ? Is your custom exhaust system made in tubing smaller than the stock bore ? This is the only way that I can see your exhaust system might be 'strangling' the motor's breathing & power

Do you have a cat in the system? this could be the problem.

Ive just done a set of heads for a chap who strapped them on his converted car which promptly made less power and torque than it should.
It was abysmal. After some conversations with him i found out he was using a cat converter he'd had squirrelled away in his shed for years. Turns out the cats too small (2.0litre needs a 3.0litre version) and was absolutely killing power and torque. Replaced it with a de-cat pipe and it flys according to him... Ive yet to find out if the cats damaged at all but i suspect its got some internal problems as well as being too small. If you can get the cat off you should be able to see through it with a torch at one end but itll be very directional ie, youll have to be looking straight down the sections to see out the other side. Could be a cat problem but id still be looking elsewhere first. Do the basics, plugs and leads, compression test, dizzy cap and rotor, fuel filter and fuel pressures, air filter, ignition timing etc. |

Thanks you have all said the same as i was originally thinking, there is no cat on the car its just a straight through exhaust (2.5" if i remember correctly?) .
Got a funny feeling it has something to do with a sensor somewhere just a case of going through everything till i find it, was going to changed plugs, leads, cap etc anyhow. When i got the exhaust done i thought if its straight through it would help get the gasses out quicker and the guy who done it checked it would be fine before making it up. Sometimes its a rocket other times it holds back! |
