Like all maintenance, the cost of going back and doing it properly at a late stage, is a huge, sometimes insurmountable, effort, both financially, and in available resources.
It may seem costly, but it is a far better option to have a decent plan from the beginning, and stick to it.
I think at this point, the best they can do is to look at the apple example, and emulate it.

However, Apple have a major advantage, in that they maintain a tighter grip on the specification process. Something that has often been a source of criticism, but that graph is a good demonstration why.

Love apple, or hate them, as a brand, I think their entire approach safeguards the longterm interests of their customers. And it's a philosophy that pertains to many things, not just phones/computers.

I have motorola Defy, I agree its not on the current software update......"Gingerbread"......
but its an excellent phone......can survive a splash or hard knock.

The android 2.3 Gingerbread will be released for it next year.

I have the SonyEricsson XPERIA X10i, it was not scheduled for Gingerbread but SE gave in to the community and released an update to 2.3.3.

I also read on the SE blog recently that SE have donated programming assistance and hardware to a group of MOD's on XDA in an attempt to support the community.

Anyways, the community on XDA already work on releasing ICS for a large number of phones and they will most likely succeed well ahead of the official releases. One of the guys on vagcars.dk wrote the other day that he's now running a pre-release of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich aka. Android 4.0) on his Nexus S...

Seriously, how many people upgrade their phones unless they have problems with it, and then it's most likely to be done by a service centre ;-)

90% of the owners don't care about software as long as the phone and SMS part works..

I actually prefered Android 2.1 as the youtube app had more options on settings.

Another benefit with Android is that the Android software is open and can be changed by
after market devolepers, there's one software called........"Cynogen" its pretty cool.

I will say that O.S is stable and very smooth compared to Android and there's less security
risks. Windows 7 is pretty good and as smooth as O.S.

1) Switching from WiFi to 3G and back is a little flakey. Once a week or so I have to reboot to restore connectivity.

2) The 'two-finger' touch function to expand pictures has been removed. It was only added in FroYo and I suspect it may be a patent issue.

Yes there tends to be more software hiccups with the android operating system.
Its not as smooth as Apple O.S. Apple is a giant and has more software engineers so
there tend to be less glitches at first.....Android does get there in the end.

There's just to many types of phones out there.........it doesnt help!

1 and 2 are known bugs in 2.3.6 plus the overall speed of the device have degraded ;-)

Nexus One. Still belongs to Google, technically.
