I want to improve the brakes on the CQ.
![]() I'm not really up on braking systems, so I don't know much about there components tbh. ![]() I'm guessing a 280mm upgrade on the front is the way forward. Is there also an upgrade option for the rears too? like maybe using the discarded 256mm brakes from the front? or is this not possible? Also, I have some requirements, if possible. Firstly, I wish to retain the 4x108 stud pattern. Secondly, I want to keep the ABS. & Thirdly, I'd like to throw some Black Diamond Disc's and pads in to the mix. please tell me all this is possible. ![]() (sorry if this has already been covered) Gaz. |

ABS is based around the brake lines and a rotational sensor that picks up driveshaft position/speed etc. So changing calipers wont affect the system.
Braking efficiency is more to do with application area than disc size.... Caliper piston diameter is the main one, which can be limited by the pad size. A stock sized caliper with say 20% increase in piston diameter will yield better results than an oversized caliper that offers a 10-15% increase in piston diameter. 280mm will fit under 15" wheels fine with the right caliper fitment. For a budget setup have a look at VW golf option, namely mk2/mk3 which from memory have same carrier fitment. Golf Rallye will probably have the best search results.

Sorry for the momentary hijack, but what size discs as stock did 1983 UR's have?
I only put that question out as mine is already 280 up front and i thought they may have been smaller.?? |

I'm not sure 15" will fit on 280mm brakes. There is very simple upgrade - the same brake kit, as used on B3 20v/ B4 20vt aka S2. Don't know about rear calipers but front ones were also used on A200 10vt. Front are 276x20mm and with B3 discs it will allow to use 15" wheels with 4x108. |

290mm will fit under 15" wheels fine............
Caliper fitment is the same (should have clarified that in my post)...

There is no reason for very strong rear brakes, that would cause only problems. When braking, rear brakes are needed for balance, front ones are the ones which do the job. I presume B3 20v/B4 20vt got rear calipers with 38mm pistons instead of 36mm and that's all. |
