Default Apparently I have no insurance!

Got pulled over by the old bill tonight for them to tell me have I no car insurance!

I swapped over my insurance which started yesterday with HSBC (21st) at 12:01am but apparently it's not appearing on their database. So here's the annoying bit...I've got a 7 day wonder and have to go down the police station with my insurance documents and driving licence.

I think I'm going to be having a stiff word with HSBC tomorrow, even if it's not within their control! Fookin' inconvenient if you ask me and it's probably down to incompetent people...as usual.

Are HSBC the insurance company or just the broker ? With private car policies it's usually the insurance company's responsibility to put insured vehicles in the motor insurance database. It might just be that it takes a while for them (insurance co) to process it and update the system. Have you done an online check to see if it's on there now ?

http://www.askmid.com/ownvehicle/

Contracts of insurance have to be evidenced in writing, hence the issuing of insurance certificates. If the insurance cover only started in the last couple of days, it's understandable that the certificate / cover note might not have arrived yet. In view of the producer, and the fact that there is an offence of failing to produce documents, even if the vehicle is actually insured, I'd be inclined to remind HSBC that you require a certificate by whatever the deadline is for the producer, or they will be reimbursing you for any costs you might incur as a result of any prosecution that happens.

Bloody insurance companies.

I have all necessary documentation (I renewed my car insurance about three weeks ago and insurance certificate/breakdown of cover have been received). Been to the police station this morning and showed the nice lady the insurance certificate and she said that was fine. She phoned HSBC whilst I was there and they confirmed I was insuranced...just not on the bloody database!

Anyway, cleared my name for now until I get stopped by a traffic cop on the way up to the BC this weekend! Three and a half hour trip for me!

Gaz - no they didn't get funny at all, believed me straight away as I wasn't trying to fabricate a story and was telling the truth. Very pleasant chaps, were interested in the car and were asking me if I'd seen the new series of Ashes to Ashes!

Seems like you were pulled by a cop with a bit of common sense. They are well within the law to seize any car that doesnt show up on the database (even if you have the insurance cert on you!) and charge you for the pleasure. Some police officers know that recently swapped policies wont show up on the database for a while but others enforce the law rigidly. Not on database? You could have a long walk home though no fault of your own

Well, in that case, sounds like you were lucky.
I'm sure most are ok, but there are a few who must think that because they enforce the law they Obviosly know everything & are allways right..

I saw a police man on national tellevision 'crime watch thingy' say to a guy that the smoke coming from the exhaust wouldn't have anything to do with the radiator.. This was after the guy had told the cop how he was looseing water and had just filled it up again!

They let him go on his way,.. but by the looks of the 'smoke' it was quite clear it was a head gasket issue.

I tell you, some people don't know anything! and unfortunatly for us, some of thos people are coppers.

My friend stoped his car the one night cause it started playing up and was very loud.. A copper came over to see what was going on, and wouldn't let them move the car because it making too much noise, and he wouldn't even let them pop the bonnet to have a look because in the coppers words: "Why do you want to pop the bonnet? clearly you have a defective exhaust!".

& It wasn't the exhaust at all.. One of the spark plugs had stripped its thread and had come out of the head!

oops! think i just had a rant! sorry.

DOESNT LOOK LIKE AN EXHAUST PROBLEM TO ME..... ORIFICER

That's nothing. Only problem u have there is that cops in uk have too much electronic devices

How would u like if cops in uk would act as racketeers like it's happening in this niiiiiice country where I am? Just some examples, mostly from our capital:

On beginning of one bridge is small sign "zone 30" [because there are some repairs going on], sing "end of the zone" is 1 km away, nice stright street without obstacles, and some cops in evenings who catch drivers who don't remember or who haven't even seen this little sign;

one street is temporary converted to one way because of repairs, what does cops do? They stay there and fine drivers who make turn to this street because they don't know it's one way temporary - and not one cop car but three[!!!] cars, it costs 40 lvl to drivers[something about 25 pounds, maybe more];

photo radars are placed [portable, of course, and cops started using photo radars last year] not in most dangerous but in most profitable places - let's say, in place where is nice straight road or flat curve, of course, there isn't any warning signs, because unlike photo radars in uk, which have purpose of decreasing accidents and catch idiots who can't read warning signs, here they are to earn money;

typical example - if cops are staying and catching drivers and if near will be accident, they will not go there, where is accident but they will continue what they are doing

and many others. Of course, I only read about it in forums and in news because I live enough far away from our capital.

P.S. Gaz isn't that enough? It's even more serious than damaged exhaust and cop said it's exhaust because he didn't believe it's such stupid damage, I wouldn't beleve as well

The database is NOT to be relied on for the purposes of impounding your ride. Clearly the cop who stopped you knew this and that why you got a seven day ticket. I seem to think the Insurance companies have 14 days to update the database, i will check and get back with the answer, but alot of them are very slow. I have a list of said companies who in my expeirience are not on the ball with these updates, HSBC is on it along with Mr Happy Norwich Union to name but too.

The cop who dealt with the defective exhaust can only pass his opinion on it being defective, after having a look and nothing more. If its got a hole in it and it can be clearly seen, then that is an offence of defective exhaust, gases escaping, not passing through the silencer and also noisy. If its just noisy, no holes, except the one at the end!, unless he, or she! is authorised to test and inspect vehicles and indeed tests the noise on a home office approved, calibrated noise meter, then the evidence is not acceptable for a prosecution....BEWARE!... dont assume he, or she!.. hasnt got a mate with a T5 round the corner with a boot full of tools for the job!!

Oh...Fairly new legislation to beware of.....No MOT is now a fixed penalty ticket, so is No Insurance, £200 big ones and you lose your car with all the expence to get it back, and also no tax, £80 no points and again a walk home. Still be comforted in the fact that if you get smashed out of your head on smack, screw somenes house and nick the Dvd, then before leaving, drop a big brown fish on their carpet.....you might just get a caution!!!

Hope this helps.
