Default blooming DVLA nobbers

I sent off the Tax disc for one of my cars on 24th November to get a refund.

I used Form V14 which allows you to SORN it at the same time.

They sent me the refund, great.

But yesterday (dated 24th February) I got a letter saying the car wasn't SORNd or taxed, so I owe them £80.

They got the form, because they sent me the cheque, but because THEY are a bunch of useless nobbers, they reckon I owe them £80.

They try to turn it round by saying "it's up to the owner to phone up after 4 weeks if you haven't received the SORN acknowledgement". That's arse!

I shall be replying and telling them so.

But if I pay up in 4 weeks, it's only £40!!! Bloody bargain.

Another one of Gordon's ways of getting money out of people, as I imagine most people would pay it.

What a bunch of tits.

When you write in, maybe you could tell them that in the event that the matter results in court proceedings, these will be rigourously defended, and you will be claiming costs / expenses.

If they were to prosecute you, it would be worth pointing out that while it may be law that you have to sorn a vehicle, the bit about ringing the buggers after 4 weeks is only a recommendation, and as such, it would be just as unreasonable if you had failed to tax or sorn a vehicle and then blamed them on the basis that they didn't phone to remind you about it.

I had exactly the same issue with a car I broke for parts.

Send off the appeal stating the car was SORNED using V14 with the date of the form in the appeal.

I also had manually SORN'd the car at the post office using the V5. If you do this, you get a receipt which clearly states the status as SORN

Same happened to me. To prove that id tried to sorn the car I took a photocopy of the tax refund cheque they had sent me and sent it back to them as proof the tax had been refunded with a letter asking how they could refund a tax disc without sorning a car at the same time. The system should make it impossible, but they managed to do it anyway.

After a week or so I got a letter saying no further action would be taken. Halfwits.

Many people just ignore begging letters from the DVLA asking for SORN fines. To date I dont know of anyone whos been made to pay, you get a couple of stroppy letters then hear nothing ever again.

The SORN fine department is a private company based in Wellingborough (IIRC) The DVLA pass your details onto them and they chase it up. If the DVLA are halfwits, these people must be quarterwits.

It's all in the Database....

But a Database is only as good as the information inputted...

AND when you pay £4.50ph for dribbling cretins to enter said information into said database you get what you pay for...

The DVLA are bloody useless.

Going slightly off subject; I sent off for a 'duplicate V5 certificate' as I lost the one for SYD. They sent one back promptly and I will say I was impressed for all of a few seconds until I realized that they had inputted the registration wrong, which in turn gave me the wrong log book!

There was no bloody excuse for this as I quite clearly filled out the form with the registration details along with the make, model and year of the car. So how can they get it wrong?! Anyway, phoned them up and they said the usual empty-headed DVLA sentence 'We are sorry for any inconvenience caused, we'll sent you the correct one as soon as possible.' Did they f**k. Waited about a week (by which time I wanted to sell the car and it still hadn't turned up. The only way to get it was to phone up and demand to speak to someone with higher authority than the monkey working in the office. Eventually, I got some sense out of someone and got it in the post the next day. But then why should I have to go the effort of chasing it up and not them?

Finally got this sorted.

A letter came yesterday which says:

"Thank you for your recent enquiry concerning the late licensing penalty requested from you for allegedly failing to relicence your vehicle as required.

The contents have been noted and under the circumstances, no further action will be taken on this case."

I have just re SORNd my ther two vehicles, and I might do it on a monthly basis just to annoy them.

But probably not as it is just an automated system. Still it might make me feel better!!!

I've had the usaul probs with it taking ages to get V5's back and they're still chasing me for a fine on a BMW 530d I sold 18months ago - they didn't chase me for over a year - where was it then eh???
Biggest issue tho, when I sent off my licence for change of address they lost it. After 9months of messin it finally arrived Great, except with only provisional entitlement!!!! After a legal battle and getting stopped for driving otherwise than in accordance with my "licence" I finally got an apology (that the CPS forced them to give). I had to retakle my whole driving test though!!!!! Including hazard aware thingy and theory!!! When I sat down at a computer for my hazzard thing my FECKING name was wrong on the screen! SOme muppet there then just tapped in and re typed it - shows how they cock up so easy. Caused me 2 years of grief and I even had to take a B+E test so I could tow a trailer as I lost my Grandfather rights!
I'll never trust them again. They bare faced lied in court about it, they were shown up for it but I suffered NOT them! I feel for people on Road Wars and Traffic Cops on TV when the "computer says no" about their licence - been there!!! Total bunch of incompetenat idiots.
