Default VIN decoding

I have a historic registered RS2000 and have been trying to see if my 1983 registered GT Coupe has a build date of pre April 1983. Emailed Audi DE after failing with Audi UK. DE said contact a main dealer with VIN info and as my son in law runs a main dealer body shop, he tried but came up as unknown but their parts dept also told me that some parts were discontinued in 2013!!

Does anyone know how to decode a VIN? For Fords you can break it down into colour/trim/ build etc so looking for similar for Audi..thanks

Pretty sure Audi Tradition will sell you a birth certificate stating when and where it was made.

That was included in their reply to try a UK dealer. It was a link to having a certificate produced for 30 euros but the image wasn’t clear enough to see if it came with a build date and it was in German with no hint of a translated version being available, hence me trying the UK dealer first

I ordered "birth certificates" for 2 of my classic Audis.
I would say - must have one. Comes with all description about the particular car, technical data and full press info. Very interesting to read and lots of info (in English).

You can order here

Sounds interesting, but pricey at 100 euros for a few sheets of paper! What sort of information specific to the actual car is included? Cheers

All I am after is a production date to apply for historic tax…dud it with an email to Ford. Almost instant reply followed up by a Ford Headed letter which I sent to DVLA and sorted…not a penny

I recently emailed Audi customer services with this request and found them very helpful. They confirmed the build date by return email same day and were happy to post out a letter on Audi headed paper so I have written confirmation ready for historic vehicle status application.

Do you have an email address I could use? And possibly the wording you used? I tried both UK and Germany but was told up I would have to go the birth certificate route. What you have done is exactly what I did for my Ford RS2000…thanks
