Default Radiator fan problems

Hi guys, got a very strange problem I hope you can help me with. Cars an 88 coupe gt 1.8
When I approached my car this morning the radiat or fan was going like the clapers. It can't have been going very long as the battery still had plenty juice in it and it started fine.

Iv had a poke about after work and everything seems ok. Fan coming on and going off every few minuts when idling.

For the life of me i can't think whats going on
