One of the best cars I ever owned, and I've regretted selling it ever since.

Turbos.
Make sure no nasty noises, squeals on boost. It's an engine out job to resolve, and really needs to be done in pairs.

Manifolds. Earlier ones had a tendency to shed bits (allegedly) leading to turbo damage, and lambda damage.

Good service record, with good oil. It's a 'glass' engine if I'm not mistaken, using the Alusil alloy block. Short cuts in the servicing are not good.

I believe most are running with a number of existing faults. The likes of MRC might be a good port of call.

Mine easily returned 30mpg with sensible driving, and easily returned top teens with big-grin driving. On standard tyres, it was hoot in Northumberlands winter, and embarrassed a friend who had a Beemer that couldn't get out of the drive in the snow.

Having done a few jobs on a friend's S4

Listen for suspension knocks and clunks - there's 8 arms with bushes to wear out.

oil leaks - mainly turbo oil lines and sump / cam cover gaskets

abs modulator can fail - gives tc and abs fault lights on the dash

maf - this can give the same errors as the abs modulator

egt sensors often fail if the maf has gone. They are not cheap

If you have vcds and the seller allows, run a scan

I had mine for 7 years... Used roughly 20.000 liters of 99 octane.

Still miss it...

There are Audi S/RS owners and then there are Audi S4/RS4 B5 owners... They are NOT the same ;-)
No matter what, you can ALWAYS make a 2.7T go faster...

Nope... Cast iron and it's a rock solid engine. One of the best Audi ever made.

Standard drivetrain (except front axles) is good for 1.000+ BHP. In that case use front axels from Audi 100/200.

Standard engine is good for 400+ BHP on software and K04 turbos. Add standard 2.4L (N/A) heads with RS4 cams and RS4 manifolds for 500+ BHP - just keep the sodium filled valves

Is it, indeed? It is one aspect that has so far put me off looking at others, since I sold mine. I didn't want to risk getting involved in a car with higher mileage than mine.
I might revisit the idea.

Funny enough the 2,4/2,6/2,8 L engine should be the same base - however, people complain about them using oil - lots of oil... The 2,7 however does not...

My old S4 had done close to 300.000 km on 3 pairs of K03 turbos and was chipped pretty early on - probably around 50.000-60.000 km... When I sold it it used less than 1L oil between service.
I used Shell 0W-40 Helix Ultra (Ferrari oil) and since it was chipped (+20% HP/NM) I used 10.000 km service intervals and 100.000 km on timingbelt.
Factory sparkplugs are good for 100.000 km and up to 600'ish BHP. I tried racing plugs - total waste of money - they suck.

This is where I got mixed up. I was doing some research on the V8 alusil block, and came across some notes referring to the V6 2.7/5v as being Alusil. It seemed strange that the V8 is such an oil consumer, while the V6 barely used any, but by that time, I had sold the S4, so took it for granted.

every day is a learning day!

Mine also had been chipped, and was capable of some pretty impressive acceleration.
