Default c4 100 electric window probs.

not been on here for a few months due to wife problems, enough said about that i think!

my 100 92 v6 quattro.
the electric windows have been playing up. sometimes on start up they dont work (as in non of them) sometimes they stop working as your driving where they did previously earlier on in a journey. the switch illumination also goes off when the windows dont work!
this has been intermittent but over the last few weeks its been more and more problematic.
as of friday theyve packed up alltogether...... ive yet to have a look at whats wrong with them as my power-probe is at work.
but the fuse is fine in the panel under the bonnet on the drivers side. theres no broken wires into the drivers door.

any pointers guys?

Hi mate

check wiring in the rubber boot , between the door and Apillar
the wiring insulation gets broken and wires can short/fail after constant open/closing of door.#
i had this with both my Audi 80 and Audi 100quattro

hope this helps
cheers
john

Do these have the large double width window relay?

If so pop the cover off of it and check all solder joints for cracks.
On our 80A tye windows were permanently live then became intermittent. Then i found that someone had used a strip of cardboard to hold the relay 'on' to get round this solder problem
The red one is the problem here with a dull circular line aroud the joint, easy to miss when you first get the cover off.

is that the big double relay under the panel under the bonnet?

ive checked the wires inbettween the a pillar and the drivers door.

its been intermittent for weeks progressivly getting worse. a broken wire would be ok one day and then broken the next.

Should be under the drivers side of the dashboard. Might have to drop some trim.

i say fixed but when you send the window down from the top it jerks two/three times before it goes down and the relay clicks in time with the jerking. hmmm maybe not that fixed but if its working in a fashion thats fine with me.

im saving up for an early e46 bmw 330i touring. the least i can spend on this shed the better!

Hi, Thanks for your tip about the relay. Found it quite easily and it was the same joint on mine that had gone dry. Fixed in an hour and cost nothing. I'm told that faults in the thermal cutout (One of the ones with the aluminium case and the yellow painted end (443 937 105) near to the relay also sometimes cause the same problem. (There are two yellow ones and a red one close to the Window relay on my '95 Coupe.)

Cheers mate

Could anyone tell me if the relay type and location is the same on the C3 please? My drivers door window goes down fine, but won't go back up until the ignition is switched off and the drivers door has been opened and closed twice!
The other three windows work fine.
