Default 7A Coolant Temp Sensor

does anyone have any idea why the old faulty sensor from my 20v engine has four contacts and the replacement one only three? the car runs to perfection now that the new one has been fitted and the temp gauge works as it should, however, the fan still hasn't cut in by this point and i'm a little concerned > >

and the new one . .
