Default Speaker Grille Removal A100 T44

How do you get the front speaker grilles off? pre-88 A100 T44

Haynes manual just says 'remove it', and the diagram suggests a single screw holds it on, but I don't see it.
I've tried levering it as much as I dare, but it's pretty secure.

I want to try some different speakers.
There's money in there too!

Thanks, G.

"IF" its anything like a type85 (and I am guessing here) then the grills may be screwed in from below. You may have to take out the lower dash panel or either see if you can remove the air vents to get a better look in there?

Had to do this on an H reg one the other week, as the speaker had died. The only thing I could find to replace it was one out of a portable telly. Better than nothing at short notice on a sunday afternoon I suppose.

The grilles are different on yours. On ours, the metal mesh lifts up to reveal screws. On that, I'm guessing that they might be clipped on, but I couldn't guarantee it. If it is clips, the ones at the back probably lift up, the ones at the front then slide. Be careful not to smack the windscreen with the screwdriver if you try it.

I removed mine, there is a screw, near the outer edge on the door side, I had to pry mine off and managed to break a clip

I still haven't managed this job! Done plenty of levering but don't want to break anything.

So where is this screw then Charles? Is it visible in the photo?
Looking at the end of the dash I see the 2 big screws, lower than the speaker, and I think they basically hold the fascia on. And there is 2 rivets at the top.

The Bentley manual also shows a screw in a diagram, but I'm just not seeing it for some reason!

Oh yeah, have to take the A pillar trim off, just pops off with a bit of force. Theres an 8mm hex headed screw under it ontop of the speaker grill.

Thank you Charles, that's very helpful. It's a 7mm screw but I'll let you off!

Unfortunately my intended replacement speakers were just a bit too big.

Now why couldn't the workshop manuals have included a photo like that? The diagram in Haynes/Bentley is very misleading.

What speakers did you go for? There's a little bit of space to play with under the grill for cutting a larger hole. I really need to get new speakers in my car though, they do sound awful

Well I tried some Clarion and Panasonic ones which I had saved from previous cars.
The Clarion ones actually fitted the hole ok, including the mountings, but it had a largish metal surround which stopped the grille going back on.
Oh, and don't try and brush the dust off the cloth on the back of the grille - it totally disintegrated!
