Default help

i just brought a audi 100 1988 2226cc and the problems so far are the spedo works but the mileage dont is it electronic? and ther is no oil light on dash, changed the bulb no joy
any ideas please

hmmm what type of dash has it got,,,,, is it anologue?

no its my 100 sport i just brought but it has a wire going into it as well as a cable drive

Is yours the "facelift" curved top dash???

If the speedo needle is "jumping" slightly, the milometer doesn't register.

still read the link and follow instructions, it is a common problem to 100s and 80s too.

I apologise if this has been covered in a previous post but I think I've found the definitive fix for the problem of the speedo needle jumping up and down.

It's been an intermittent but regular problem with my dash and a tap to the top right-hand side of the speedo usually brought it back to normal operation. Having bruised my knuckles a couple of times I decided to remove the thing and see if I could fix it once and for all and so far I appear to have done just that. My cruise control works properly now and the computer now gives a correct reading for mpg and average speed.

On the back of the dash instrument panel there is a plastic cover which when removed contains a pcb. There is then another pcb which contains all the instrument light bulbs, this does not have to be removed. If you remove the four screws which holds the speedo onto this pcb and pull it forwards you will see that there are two sets of long pins which, when the speedo is mounted, locate into what looks like a couple of pc jumpers (they are green on mine) but they are permanently soldered onto the pcb. If you look at the pins, roughly where they come into contact with the jumpers you may see a dark line (carbon build-up). Get a pencil rubber and rub on the pins to remove the carbon till they are nice and clean again. Next, find something very thin and slot it between the plastic cover of the jumper and the metal inserts inside it. The idea here is to try and close the inserts up a bit so the pins when inserted make a firm contact. Be very careful not to destroy the plastic covering whilst doing this. (If you do, it's not the end of the world, just replace the pin arrangement with some wire to permanently solder the speedo connections.)

Check the other pcb for obvious dry solder joints (did all mine on previous attempts to fix, only fixed the fuel guage) then replace the whole thing and try it.

Mine has now been perfect for over a week when normally I'd be thumping the speedo five or six times in a short journey.

its mainly the miles dont register i can get the speed, but no register on the amount of miles coverd? but i will try the other in case thanks

I had an A reg 1984 Audi 100 with the same problem. It turned out to be the worm drive for the mileage cogs which had turned brittle and broken. Fortunately one from a vauxhall carlton was the same and once I replaced it the mileage worked again.

Like pimpdriver said, it's all electronic, which is great until things stop working. My H reg car has the same problem, (went from Portsmouth to Oxford and back, and it clocked up about 11 miles !) including the jumpy speedo needle, and I've had the whole instrument binnacle apart twice already. I'll give it one more chance, and check those jumper type connections you mentioned.
