Shoot - I've not had one of those yet!
As these cars age, of course, more and more nuts round themselves off just by rusting. I use a Teng 3/4" drive 6-point flank drive socket and haven't had a problem yet. If you get REALLY desperate I'll mail it up but it HAS to come back quickly. I'm in negotiation with a tool supplier here in Sheffield who has a special purpose 'get anything off' set in stock but wants too much moolah for it. |

What size is that nut?
I have a set of rounded nut taker offers that are like a socket with opposite threaded teeth inside it that bites into the nut to get it off. I cant remember how big a nut they can deal with though. Have you heated it up? |

I have had these before and the least painfull way is to drill down the side of the nut, it is quite a soft metal,
do one side first and use a small chisel to split the nut open, if it's still not loose enough to undo, drill another hole in the nut opposite the first. |

As I said, I've never had one hang up. 280Nm is not that much on a 32mm nut - get a 3/4" drive six-point socket on it and the 1000Nm torque wrench - off it comes.
The problem is if some helpful sod has Loctited it. There should be a ring of white Loctite 1cm wide on the splines, but nothing on the nut. And the nut, of course, is an ALWAYS RENEW item - they're actually triangular when you take them out of the packet. But drilling and chiselling is a recommended way - Mr Chisel is often your best friend. As always - quality counts. Don't worry about the price of a good chisel - it WILL pay off. |
