Gearbox problems

I own a 91 coupe 2.3e my engine code is Ng, i heard a knocking coming from the engine so i had the tappets and belts replaced, now my sports gearbox is thunking when i come back through the gears, (its an automatic), does anyone know how to fix my dilemma and where would i need to take her, she's all i have and i am reluctant to send her to the knackers yard...

Hi Mark!

Check the Automatic Transmission Fluid mate.
Its the dipstick furthest back with a red end to it.

You check it by firstly driving the car for say 10 miles,pulling the dipstick,wiping it,reinserting it then that gives an accurate reading.You need to do this with the engine still running.

If the fluid is any other colour than pinky red,change it asap.It could well be brown or darker (aka black

!).This would be old,burned transmission fluid.

The fluid helps to keep the gearbox functional as well as cool,so anything other than pinky red wont do,ever.
