I guess my clutch is kippered....

I'm having problems changing gear in my Audi, The pedal needs to be pushed through the carpet to get it into gear and even then its hard work, often crunching and making horrible noises. Basically its like the clutch isnt disengaging properly. The biting point is right at the floor too. Theres no adjustment left on the cable and theres no "backlash" on the clutch release arm, I.e the cable and clutch arm has no slack in it.

Ive had clutches go in many ways but this way seems to be a new one on me. Any advice?

Its a 1986 1.8 Audi 100 BTW!

So far my 100 has managed to leave me stranded 4 times

Is your clutch pedal coming back up?
If not most likely slave or master cylinder, try to bleed the system (im presumming yours will be like mine) at the passenger side calliper NOT to bleed nipple on the slave cylinder this will have no effect!

I have replaced the slave cylinder in mine in november, then the master cylinder went last month, then the slave cylinder went again! thankfully the second time it was covered by warenty as a genuine part fitted at a main dealers.

If your replacing one of the cylinders do the other as well as if one has worn out chances are the other has as well

is it cable or hydraulic?

I don't know if the early base models had cable or hydraulic, as Lankytim's is a carb model.

Its cable guys!!

Ive a theory though, the clutch arm may have slipped on the clutch yoke thing. Im going to have a go at resetting it tomorrow.

But.......... it is quite common for newbie Audi owners to say "my clutch cable has gone", and they don't realise it is a hydraulic one........

I wish it were hydraulic, they seem to have a much better feel to them.

I had a sudden lack of clutch travel once, I suspected a collapsed thrust bearing and changed it only to have the cable completely snap...in heavy traffic at rush hour. A post mortem decided that as the cable strands started to break one by one I got less travel on the pedal due to the cable strands untwisting. Can't think of a way to check the cable unless it can be pulled out of it's outer sheath.
