Default Brake Lights

On my Audi 100 Avant 1990 2.3 the brake lights work intermittently whilst lighting up the bulb failure light on the dash. Doesn't always happen but has been getting worse for the last couple of weeks. The light will go off until I brake again when it beeps at me and the failure bulb relights again. When the bulb failure light is not there the brake lights work, but as I said sometimes they work, sometimes not. Is there anything I need to check first? Is this a common problem? Thanks guys in advance.
