Default V.A.T

WHY IS IT that when you buy something secondhand from a breaker you get charged VAT?

The VAT was already paid by the person buying the car from new so yet AGAIN you get taxed twice.

Or it could be that they are turning over £60k a year so have to be VAT registered?

VAT is not a scheme to help businesses profit from punters. If your turnover (not profit) exceeds the threshold - about £60k as mentioned - then you have to be part of the VAT scheme.

VAT is charged on goods and services supplied to any customer in the UK. The retailer then pays this collected VAT back to HM Revenue and Customs. HE DOESN'T PROFIT FROM THE VAT ELEMENT AT ALL.

VAT on second hand goods is a contentious issue and always has been. However, like most taxes, it isn't a level playing field and you don't have a right of reply. Look at stamp duty on a home. Last time somebody paid the stamp duty on a house purchase but the next buyer has to pay it too.

Inheritance tax is even worse as it attacks people when they have lost a loved one. Everything handed-down at death is taxed - even though it has all been taxed before.

Fuel tax is another one where you pay tax on already taxed goods.

You use tax-paid money (wages) to buy fuel. It costs pennies until fuel duty is slapped on it. The VAT is added on top as a percentage of the cost+duty. If you die with fuel in your car, it gets taxed again when your beneficiary receives the car.

All this so that a feckless government can spend YOUR money on things you don't want or can give it back to the feckers who don't want to work/contribute in the first place.

Absolutely correct, we're VAT registered and basically act as a tax collector.... But provide our time collecting taxes for free....

Dont forget the benefits of being vat registered though,ie claiming back the VAT on just about everything you buy, business related or not (i am not saying you do but i know of people who do)
