The others were all a long time ago. The 1st was a W reg 1981 1.6 GLS Auto, back in 1987. Then I briefly had a'79 V plate manual thing, but it wasn't very good. I can't remember what happened to that, (yes it really was that uninteresting). The most recent was another 5 cylinder one (manual again) but it was some sort of gunmetal grey colour with scabs of lacquer falling off all over it. I had to change the engine in that one. In fact, it was a bit of a nigtmare. I bought it with a broken CV joint. I replaced this, taxed it and drove off up the road. Then the oil light came on and the big ends went. I bought another engine from All Audi in Bristol, *they sent it out on a pallet via TNT to my mates workshop) but when I put it in, it smoked like a factory chimney. Took it out, pulled it apart, fitted the pistons and head from the original engine and it went ok after that. I only sold it because it needed so much doing to the body work, and I couldn't be bothered, so I put it in a car auction. |

Sounds like you've got it bad anyway!! Must be a sucker for punishment if you keep on going back for more!
Glad you found your way in here!! Hopefully, between everyone on here, we might just be able to muster up enough knowledge to help you if you need it!!! Although it seems with the elastic band fix, you're more of a qualified mechanic than me anyway! My skills stop at gaffer tape and cable ties!! ![]() ![]() |

I decided I might as well fix them myself and save the money. It's one way to learn I suppose. I think the tiny return spring for the choke butterfly needs replacing. That's where the elastic band is at the moment. Here's a scan of a photo of my first 80, taken in 1989. Sorry it's only a partial view. I was admiring the coupe on the garage forecourt and wishing I could afford it. (£2450) * I couldn't afford the girl in the front seat * ![]() |
