Morning All
My engine has developed that tappety sound so my guess is I need to order some tappets. My question is whilst I've got the engine partially dismantled are there any other jobs I could be doing at the same time? Does anyone have a good video on tappet replacement? Thanks in advance. |

My 1.6 is the same when Rev come back to idle it taps then stops. Does the camshaft need changed at the same time on these?

This is quite a big job and these engines are know to be a bit tappey. First of all, are you using the correct grade of oil? Then, has it been changed frequently? You can use a flushing oil to try and free them up. If they only tap for a short while on start up, I would not worry too much. If the car isn't used very often you need to change the oil and filter every year at least.

The Audi service manual states: "run engine until radiator fan comes on at least once. Bring engine speed to approximately 2500 rpm for 2 minutes. If valve lifter is still noisy, replace as follows"
I did this once on my old rattly coupe 20v and just before the 2 mins were up, all the noisy lifters went quiet.
