I recently got the back box, centre muffler and pipes replaced(All ss). The centre muffler is straight through and the back is muffled but less than stock. I still can't hear the 5 cylinder warble I was hoping for. I don't want boy racer loud I just want to hear the engine a bit more. Was thinking of getting the cat changed to a more free flowing one. Will that give me the result I have described or do I need to do more. I have a 200 Turbo if that make much difference.
Thanks. |

Get rid of the Cat altogether for a start. Then, if 'sound' is more important than 'go', just remove the turbo too and you will hear the noise you want.

You have to remember though that the turbo ' chops up the sound'. A naturally aspirated I5 will always sound more 5 potty. BUT, get rid of the centre box, or severley reduce the size and have a nice back box. Turbo's need the least amount of back pressure that you can get away with. You should be able to get yours sounding like an MB or WR with a Scorpion.
Also just thinking that your car, with it being a 200, will probably have better sound deadening than an Ur due to the more 'upmarket' status of the car. My S6 is the same. She has a sodding great 20v motor in it shoving in the region of 290 - 300bhp and you can hardly hear it from outside the car never mind the inside. Peel the carpets back in the footwells and the amount of insulation / carpet thickness is incredible.......just a thought.

Turbos act as silencers so remember its not going to be as loud as a KV or as raw as Rich pointed out...
Straight through with a small single box and 3" pipe should give it a more suitable soundtrack......

IMHO....
(and remember, I have a KV with a 3" (single rear box) Ur system and a WR, Ur with a single box 3" system, and also ran a KV with a 2.5" Ur twin box system, and a KE with a single box 2.5" system).... Is..... that, after the turbo, the front (flame trap) box has the most influence, followed by the centre, then rear silencer. The turbo, matched with a 10v 5 pot, is what gives Ur quattros that charismatic 'bass' note seldom recreationted in any other car. Whilst the N/A 10v has a raw, agressive noise, seldom heard in 2009... This is a KV, 3" Single rear box... And I'll just nip down stairs and add the Ur WR quattro with a 3" Single rear box... .......

Right - here you go....
![]() So both of these are the same, a 3", single (rear) box system for a Ur quattro, one mated to a WR and one mated to a KV.... One (the Ur) makes 99db, and the other makes 107db... listen to the 2 video clips several times and you can clearly hear the influence of the turbo....
