dash lights not working

Hi,
It's really beginning to get to me now.I took my car 80 b2 for not 2 weeks ago and due to one reason or another the garage kept my car there repairing the indicators n hazard warning lights which were not working.I also had to source and fit a rear door handle but that's another story.Anyway whilst repairing said indicators they had my dash in bits speedo et al all removed.Today I get my car back with a pass,but the I doctors only work intermittently,when they don't work you hear a crackling noise from behind the dash,secondly I've just tried the lights and my dash is dark,no lights in any o the instruments. The gauges fuel,temp work fine.Anyone have any idea what t problem could be?Its not the dimmer.Perhaps they forgot to plug something in when they took it apart. Thanks in advance.
