Cq speaker size's?

just wondering what size the front and rear speakers are in my type 85 cq?
as i'm going to replace them with something that don't sound quite so, erm.. 'knackered'.

They are 4 inch in the back and near enough 4 inch in the front.

A lot of people on here including myself have modified the original front speakers to accept 3.5 inch speakers (4 inch you have no room or anywhere to mount them) which fit nicely inside the stock housings. You have to take off the grills and then remove the old speker with a bit of creative cutting from a dremmel...

I have infinity speakers in front on my CQ, although a lot of others have used JBL 3.5 speakers. The difference is quite noticeable compared to the original ITT units... There was also factory option of an uprated front speaker by Blaupunkt although they were much good either lol

The rears are lot more easy to do as its all about how big the speaker magnet is on your new speakers as the hole in the bulkhead is quite small. To get the rear speakers out you have to unscrew the front cover from the back which is sandwiched between the parcel shelf. Easier to take out the parcel shelf to get them out. Have seen up to a 6x9 in the rear with only small mods to the parcel shelf to accept them.

Looks like Inifinity have stopped selling them in the UK now

Should be able to pick up either speaker for less than £30 for a pair....

There other manufaturers of 3.5 inch components, JL Audio, Audiobarn, Alpine etc, at the end of the days its up to your own preference and style of music as to what you choose to listen to - the infinitys are good for death metal

I replaced my front speakers about 7 yrs ago. You don't have to remove the mesh, you can get at them from under the dash...a struggle but worth it as you don't loose the originality.

On type 85 dash the speaker is integrated into a plastic unt with a grill bonded to the top of it, its located on the underside of the dash by two screws and comes out as a unit. If you are referring to a type 81 dash then its probably different....

Once you have taken out the original speaker from the plastic surround (you can do this with the grill on, but it means the speak is mounted from the underside and you would have to cut the dash around as it would sit proud. If you take the grill off then you can place the new speaker in from the top and then you have to make no other mods to the dash...

Once th grill goes back on afterwards, look completly stock, as the speaker fits into the orginal plastic housing.

I used a spare set of speaker units which came out of a scrapped GT, cost me £2.

I'll post some pics when I get to my other PC.....

can anyone tell me the wattage of the original units?

I have a pair of 4 inch kenwoods @ 80 watts, and a pair of 5 inch kenwoods @ 90 watts that my bro bought for the GT years ago but never fitted, so they're like new. dunno what they are worth.

I guess the 5 inch 90 watts wouldn't fit the front(although i'd like them to) , but could the 4 inch 80 watts squeeze in?

Er no not unless you do something quite radical - just measure the size of the speaker hole on the dash and you will see its even tight for a 4 inch. Only other way is to put them in the doors.

O.E speakers were probably less than 10W and they were early 80's technology at best plus don't forget its RMS you want to worry about not PMPO when its regarding wattage for speakers.

the ones you showed me were 25 watt RMS? 75watt peak?

I asume then that these 80 watt peak kenwoods i have here are of similer RMS power?

Probably, if you have the model number then you should be able to get the specs off the net for them....

Again anything will be better than the OE speakers, they are dire....
