Default So, whos going to educate me on type 81 sport quattros?

Evening all, im going to take the plunge and hopefully purchase a 5cylinder 83q saloon in the next couple of weeks once i get things sorted.

Ive done loads of messing with vw stuff putting different engines in different cars but this will be my first audi project and ive got a few questions.............

What is the gearbox known as (the 3 letters) and what power will it take??

What power will an s2 rear diff take?

Do i need a fitting kit if i fit a diesel 6spd box and im guessing ill lose the diff locks if i use this box?

Thats it for now but there will be lots more questions

URQuattro gearboxes are two-letter ;-)

Well, 500-600 bhp is not an issue... I believe the Norwegian guy Jonus is running close to 1.400 bhp on stock 5-speed and rear diff.. I would choose Audi 80/90 box before S2 and RS2, there are some quirks with early S2/RS2 1'st gear I'm told...

LOL, no way! I heard they were strong.

The car has a s2 diff i believe, so is that a down grade?

S2 diff is not a down grade, but it will have/should have a matching gearbox as well then and that can't be one with a lockable center diff as original on these cars.

S2 and normally aspirated series 2 quattro's have the same 4.11 diff ratio and wondering why the last person fitted an S2 version. The series 2 5 speeds were the strongest boxes Audi made until the arrival of the 6 speed diesel box so unless you are after a 6 speed upgrade stick to the one already in it.....
PS. Have my 6 speed conversion article from Audi Driver available if interested

If you really want to be sure to get the right parts, check up on "Jonus Racing"....

He's called "Jonus" on S2forum....

Type 81 refers to the front wheel drive models. If you are getting a quattro, it's Type 85. 85 denotes the quattro drive train. If its a sport quattro, that's Type 859 and you then need to make sure you have a secure garage!!!
