Default Help! Cambelt failure!

Ok, tensioner failure, but same result.

Is the 4 cyl "golf" engine as fitted to my audi 100 an interference engine or will it bend its valves if the belt falls off?

Help help HELP!

1.8 is interference.

1.6 isn't.

I have the 1.6 fitted to my 80CL.
Should be easy enough to find a replacement.

Time to find a nice 2 litre from a passat or a golf GTI or something. Theres loads of cheapos on ebay.

I could replace the head I guess...

Just get a head. If it's a cheapo daily driver car, keep spend minimum. You could fit a Golf GTI Mk2 head and block up the injector holes with pennies, to get slightly better performance.

2 litres from Passat or Golfs are usually "tall block" engines, slightly taller so exhausts don't align properly.

3A from Audi 80 Sport (G/H/J reg) is same physical dimensions as your 1.8.

Is there no point even trying a 2l golf engine if its a "tall block" unit? I want to take the line of minimum effort but more power would be a real bonus!

read the CLubgti link and decide from there.

It is a hell of a resource.

2 litre Golf engines are usually Mk3 golfs.

Audi 80 3A is the one you want for ease of install if you're sticking with carb power.

Ive read the link but im getting stuck with all the engine codes and different distributors. Its confusing for a VAG novice like me!

What year of Audi 80 has the appropriate engine? Theres one in my local breakers, its an injection mind...

Or theres this unit, 2litre from an Audi 80..

Sorry, I didnt read the bit you posted regarding the years! Ive been searching the web for engines and info and getting a bit confused by all the different units available, im in a bit of a panic TBH, I dont my Audi to die! Just to clarify, the units from the cars you posted links to are direct swaps? (give or take the odd injector that needs plugging)

Many thanks for your advice and being patient!

no worries. I think they are direct swaps. That's what I will be looking for anyway when I upgrade my 1.6 80CL to something more useful
