Erm.... Are you having a laugh!...

Wax forms the basic protection against road dirt/UV/Salt/tree sap/bird lime (nee Shit)...

Anything on top of the lacqour has to help protect it against damage. The 'shine' from the wax not only makes the car look better, it makes it easier to clean and stronger against damage/rust etc...

Coxy will fill you in on the nitty-gritty about 'polish and wax' but suffice to say, building up a decent layer of wax is only a benefit.

Ian has said it all to be honest.

Not much more to add to that!

In my book, you only need to polish a car once, then just top up the wax as that protects the car and the paint. And by using a proper cleaning regime (ie the 2 bucket method, or 3 in some cases) you should never need to polish your car again and only ever need to top up the wax every month or 2.
BTW, stuff like Meguiars tech wax and most "high street" waxes will last about a week.
A good wax will last about 1-2 months and will also stop red cars with single stage paint going pink!

Quick example. My CQ20V has been polished once, now I just carefully wash and then add a coat of wax onto her. The shine speaks for itself. (that's a dull day with no photoshop!)

another good reason to wax is that it's applying a protective coat onto your paint.

The clearcoat top coat is susceptible to things like airbourne contanimants, (fallout, acid rain etc), UV rays and bird lime which can cause top coat failure very quickly.

The common misconception is a car must be regularly polished to keep it looking good.
Far from it. I polish mine once. OK, when I do polish a car, I go to town on it and can spenda day or 2 days doing it, but you do it once and then just maintain the final finish by adding a protective top coat. I see a lot of people constantly polishing there car.
Polish is a mild abrasive and is actually cutting/levelling the paint. it will only be a matter of time till you polish through the top coat.

they look waxed but I'd say with a Paste wax or a spray wax looking at the consistency of the beading.

Agree, final finishing from main dealer or bodyshop stuff by the looks of it...

Good for you, treating young paint is brave, but a gentle wax is the best option, polish would have been too abrasive and you'd have had a red cloth and a grey car!...
