Question Cam Belt Change

Hi all,

Quick question

We're intending to change the cambelt on our GT5 before we start her up again as she stood for so long. Does anyone know whether we need to replace the water pump at the same time and whether any specialist tools are needed please?

Thanks in anticipation!

Trace and Dave!

i changed my water pump when i did my cambelt as they arnt that dear

the only specialist tool is to hold the crank in place when you undo the bottom bolt as its feckin tight and for re assembly but you can make one

be prepared for nicks and cuts on your hands/arms as there aint much room in there

Definately change the water pump whilst you're there. It's sort of a standard practise. You'll need a torque wrench too.

You don't NEED to - but it will be aggravating if it fails after a month and either leaks the coolant all over the M6 or snaps the belt.

I wrote http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/i5_cambelt.html for the turbo engines, but much of it covers the GT5S. There should be an idler roller from 85-E-000 001 - this should be replaced as well.

And perhaps the crank seal.

Wow, that is detailed! The problem we've had is that we've asked a couple of techie friends to help and they have all said to go to an Audi specialist. All very well, but we're trying to get her on the road on a tight budget!

For the extra half hour and few quid its well worth doin it.... You will regret it if you dont and a month or whatever its starts leaking. Then you will have to strip it all down again. Get a cam belt kit rather than just a belt on its own and check your aux belts for cracks by turning them inside out. If they are replace them as well

Hi Dave
I don’t know where you are in Warwickshire but if you would like to BORROW the tools to do the job - pulley locker, torque wrench and adapter/multiplier – I’m near Daventry and could lend them to you. PM me if you would like a lend.
