Hi all, just got my '89 90 20v Quat out of short term storage and have been driving it around over the past 3 days. It starts instantly at all times and when the engine is cold it seems to have loads of power and sounds awesome. Once I have been driving for 5 mins or so the engine note will generally change and it will become very down on power with hesitancy right through the rev range except WOT whereby it will always, without fail, clear and shoot off like a rocket. On half throttle it will kangaroo like hell and can be very embarrassing! The other thing is the car is extremely fumey and I cannot have the windows down without being gassed!. Also the temperature gauge is very erratic sometimes not moving off cold and then other times going straight up to temperature (I have not noticed a correlation between poor performance and non functioning gauge). Can anybody give me some pointers as to what is going on?
Cheers, DERV |

Try taking the top off the spark plug cover, to expose the spark plugs and thoroughly drying it out around the plugs. ANY.. And I mean any moisture under there turns to steam with the engine heat (hence why it's fine cold), it also can't escape so condenses again on shutdown and can cause the misfire. Had this twice with the S2... Both times I thought the car was a goner it was so bad.

The fumes will probably be down to one thing and one thing only. At the back of the engine, behind the cylinder head is a breather hose that comes from the crank case, made of rubber, which traverses a right angle on the near side of the engine to the rear. Over time this gets very very perished feeling all mushy, and eventually holes, filling the car with fumes which makes your eyes smart! My 90 had exactly the same problem. Audi sell a conversion kit whereby the rubber hose is replaced by two shorter hoses and a metal middle hose that carries the 90 degree bend. I bought mine from VAG parts when they were still in business.
It is a proper pain in the arse to fit but I am 100% confident that will cure it.

Nice one chaps. Went to the local audi dealer today and enquired about the breather pipe. It is available but very pricey so may cobble something together to suit.
I'm thinking maybe knock sensor(s) for the other symptoms - what colour are the plug tops? Can the engine run without them? Assuming they are only a form of microphone could I unplug them and see if the situation improves?? |

Can I ask you to disconnect your MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter) and see if it improves and advise...
