To save me taking the car apart and having it immobile does anyone know if the switch can be removed from the steering lock assembly?or do you have to take the barrel out and swap it into a good one?

you can change the switch on the back of the lock barrel. Not too bad a job.

If you just want to see if the switch is faulty you can take the cover off pull the connector of the switch and plug it on the new one turn with a screwdriver. of course you still need the key turned on the old one to release the steering lock
