Default Audi 100 Auto gearbox problem

I've got a G-reg 2.3 auto at the moment, which has a bit of a problem.

For the past couple of weeks it's been making I'm-eating-myself noises as I've been driving about, but it's been shifting OK, so I've turned the radio up to cover up the noises.

Last night I pulled away and the car drove OK until there was a THUNK and then no forwards drive. Now it seems I have a problem that turning up the radio simply ain't gonna solve.

Thankfully reverse is still working and I managed to reverse it half a mile (past the local police station) into a car park where I've abandoned it for now.

So, do you think it's full, from eating itself and if so, how do I empty it, so it can continue?

Is anyone looking for the hull of a barge? There's no rot on it, so I think it should still float.

Finally, will PimpDriver mind that I've broken his newest acquisition?

seem to remember these autoboxes have a problem with an oil seal leaking internaly which means the oil all goes in to the diff part so starving the gearbox of oil

Yes I've been warned about this but how do you check and how can you help prevent it? I'm not familiar with Auto's but my '82 200 has one which I should get checked out really...

Not sure if you can prevent it as its a seal that goes just keep checking diff / gearbox levels

I see. I think the previous owner said that you can check the gearbox level but not the diff level (or something like that). So really just keep an eye on the gearbox level. Should I renew the oil at any point or is it sealed for life? Sorry for hijacking this thread!

So long since i've seen one i can't remember if it has a drain, if it has a sump pan like the old borg warners you can always take that off to change the oil or maybe it can be sucked out with one of these new fangled machines, Thinking about it if the fault is oil going into the diff you must be able to check the diff level / fill it with oil somehow i'm 99% sure there is a level plug for the diff by the N/S drive shaft

Thanks for the advice - think it's time to read through some Auto box literature...

to check a auto for oil start engine run thru gears one at a time up and down the box so
park revirse for a couple of sec 1st 2nd 3rd drive every gear for a couple of sec do this about 4 times .whan finished put back into park.while leaving engine running check the dipstik for correct level.if its low top up by putting atf down the tube and keep checking till full .hope this makes sence to you

Okay, that makes sense. I've herd that you can wreck the box by over filling it - is this easy to do?

Don't check oil level - change it
