I wouldn't know if the engine running or not would make any difference. Never had much to do with gearboxes, clutches etc. It's all a little 'Hoccus Poccus' to me as to how it all works.

Yeah, I do believe I've been advised to do one thing at a time in the past, but of course, curiosity and a sense of adventure always seems to get the better of me!
