Actually designed by FIAT. The Lada was the FIAT 124 and all the tooling, etc. transported to Russia. Likewise, the 125 was transported to Poland and built very successfully. Thousands of them were made and some still last to this day as the engineering was so simple. They can be made to go very fast and with a bit of careful measuring and adjustment, they will handle very well. Front suspension fully adjustable for castor and camber with anti-roll bars easily made to fit. In some ways, they were ahead of their time.

By the way, the late Tony Lanfranchi won his class in the British Saloon Car Championship in a Moskvitch 412 back in the day so they can't have that bad!
