you can only tell by taking it off, you would prob. get overheating / running hot in the summer, are both the pipes to the heater hot when the fan cuts in ? the should both be as hot as the top hose ie can't touch them for long if they are the problem may be a blocked matrix (the water is only going through part of it ) or the control flap that alters the heat setting may not be working
