Erm.... Are you having a laugh!...
Wax forms the basic protection against road dirt/UV/Salt/tree sap/bird lime (nee Shit)...
Anything on top of the lacqour has to help protect it against damage. The 'shine' from the wax not only makes the car look better, it makes it easier to clean and stronger against damage/rust etc...
Coxy will fill you in on the nitty-gritty about 'polish and wax' but suffice to say, building up a decent layer of wax is only a benefit.
