Unlike the quattro suspenion, the Type 85 FWD suspension is not adjustable at the back - it is a beam axle like Golfs.
The quattro rear suspension on a Type 85 is almost the same at the rear as it is at the front, so it is adjustable, and needs to be aligned along with the front.
Knackered bushes can still allow uneven tyre wear even with correct alignment as the excessive free play will allow the wheel to be improperly positioned when the suspension is under load (e.g. cornering).
In your case with a FWD car, it could be knackered bushes or perhaps damage if the rear axle has been heavily kerbed or the car has been in an accident. My money would be on the rear axle bushes, even if they pass the MOT they could still be deflecting excessively under load.
