There's another thing with this future, at least in the shape as it's being pictured now. I'm latvian, living in a latvia, earning few hundred euros per month, and being able to afford to drive mk2 golf only because it's reliable, new wearable parts are cheap and used parts aren't expensive either, especially in the junkyards I use, and I'm doing most of the things by myself, so not only I'm using it, I'm also upgrading it, and so now it's rather well spec GTI, minus brakes. Let's say it will last some 10-15 more years, unless I'll be in need for something with more than five seats, due to family - now, what will be in my budget 10-15 years from now? Right, crap cars which today are 5 years old and then will be crying for crusher... Unreliable engines, cheap, glitchy electronics, rusty bodyshells and so on. But this electric trend is adding another edge to this - what whill be 500-1000 euros worth used electric car or hybrid like? Right, in need for expensive battery, due to age... Therefore I'm afraid the future looks like self made recumbent tricycle or quadracycle...
In the UK, I'm afraid, quite a few drivers will be taken off the road by the same causes.
