Firstly: how would you feel about them giving out your code over the phone to someone that doesn't even own your vehicle? going in to them not only safe-guards you but also them against such occurrences.
Secondly: who knows how many of these things were made, its quite possible and highly probable that the code can only be obtained if the part is in front of them.

In any case, "
faffing about with the dealer" would appear to be a far better option than trying to do it yourself (imo). No offense but if you f**! it up, well what then? a dose of humble pie and tail between your legs trying to explain that one to the dealer so that they can sort out what is in effect, your mess?, like c'mon! - Just go to the dealer and get it done man!
