The pin is (I believe) aligned with the sensor in the bellhousing when the engine is at TDC on cylinder number 1. I had read somewhere that the pin was located 60-something degrees before top dead centre. But the machine shop told me this was 'nowhere near' but it depends what you mean by TDC I suppose. If we use the TDC marker on the flywheel, then perhaps, but if we use the position of the crankshaft as the reference, then I think not.
As I just allued to, I got a machine shop to install the timing dowel. They had an original 7A flywheel to use as a template. The flywheel was fitted to a crank they had and the orientation was noted. The KV flywheel was then fitted to the same crank and the timing dowel was then added to that position on the KV flywheel. It was a bit more complicated than I envisaged;
I had originally thought to use the reference marker for TDC, but this seems to be in a different location on B2 and B3 gearboxes. So you have to fit the flywheel to a crankshaft so it orients correctly and take measurements from there.
The pilot bearing on the 7A is in the flywheel, presumably to make it easier to replace. Installing one into a virgin crankshaft was straightforward; though I did put it in the freezer the night before and put plenty of moly grease on it to help it along. it didn't reqire a lot of force to get it in. I expect removing it would be a very different story...
I used a 228mm clutch, which is the standard size for the 2.2 KV engine. The 7A engine uses a 240mm clutch normally, but I have not had any issues and nobody seemed to think I would have any when I was asking these questions myself.
I purchased the pilot bearing from ebay, it was a sachs part. Turns out I still have it as a watched item

046105313D was the part number that it matches
There seems to be another part number for the quattro though;
034105313A
Which looks different. (see link below) So whatever pilot bearing you have now is the one you need to buy for the 7A, you'll only know once you remove the transmission. I found a discussion which talks about the 2 different pilot bearings. Seems to relate to the type of gearbox fitted
