Finally got around to doing the Cambelt and water pump on my Audi 100 2.3 10v (AAR engine) last weekend.

The new cambelt is sliding forward (towards the front of the car) off the upper pulley and water pump. It is moving about 3-4mm off the pulleys and causing a loud noise rubbing against the lower cambelt cover, if I leave the car running more than a few mins you can smell burning as the belt rubs.

So my question is, what is supposed to center the belt on the pulleys and what have I done wrong so that my belt is trying to work its way off?

Hope someone can help, ive re-fitted the belt and tensioner twice now and its still doing it. If I bend the lower metal cover so that it does not touch the belt I am concerned the belt will slide off the pulley completely.
